Quick answer: Yes, your phone will work in Cozumel. Many U.S. plans from AT&T and T-Mobile already include Mexico, and some Verizon plans do too, so check yours before you pay extra. If your plan charges by the day, a travel eSIM is usually the cheapest and easiest option (about US$5 to $30 for a week, set up before you fly). For longer stays, a Telcel SIM from a Telcel store or an OXXO in town costs around 200 to 300 pesos a month. Wi-Fi is free in almost every hotel, rental, café and restaurant. Cruise passengers: turn on airplane mode at sea to avoid ship roaming charges.

We've visited and rented in Cozumel for years, and staying connected has gone from a hassle to easy. Here's how to pick the right option for your trip, and the few traps to avoid.

eSIM vs Roaming vs Local SIM at a Glance

Option Typical 2026 cost Best for
Your U.S. or Canadian plan (Mexico included) Free on many plans Anyone whose plan already covers Mexico
Carrier day pass (for example Verizon TravelPass) About US$5 to $12 per day A one-day cruise stop or a short trip
Travel eSIM About US$5 to $30 for 1 to 4 weeks of data Most visitors; no store visit, keeps your number for texts
Telcel prepaid SIM About 200 to 300 pesos (US$10 to $16) per month Long stays, snowbirds, people living on the island
Wi-Fi only Free Travelers happy to be offline between hotel, café and beach club

Prices are typical ranges and change often. Check your carrier and eSIM provider before you travel.

Will My U.S. Phone Plan Work in Cozumel?

Probably. Mexico is one of the easiest countries to roam in from the U.S.:

  • AT&T: Most unlimited plans include talk, text and data in Mexico at no extra cost.
  • T-Mobile: Most plans include Mexico. Some cap high-speed data or slow it down after a limit, so check yours.
  • Verizon: Some unlimited plans include Mexico. Others charge a daily TravelPass fee whenever you use your phone.
  • Canadian carriers: Usually charge a daily roaming fee, which adds up fast. An eSIM is often cheaper.

Log in to your carrier's app before you leave and search for "Mexico" or "international". If it says included, you're set. If it says a daily charge, compare it with an eSIM for the length of your trip.

What Is a Travel eSIM, and Is It Worth It?

An eSIM is a digital SIM card you download to your phone. You buy a Mexico data plan online, scan a QR code, and it switches on when you land. Your regular number stays on the phone, so you still get texts like bank codes, while the eSIM handles data for maps, WhatsApp and browsing.

It's worth it if your plan charges a daily fee, if you're from outside the U.S., or if you want a fixed price with no surprises. Most phones from the last few years support eSIM; check under Settings for "Add eSIM" or "Add cellular plan", and make sure your phone is unlocked.

We use Airalo. Its Mexico plans run on local networks and cost a few dollars for a short trip. New customers can use the code MYFIRSTAIRALO for 15% off their first eSIM.

Tips: Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi, but turn it on only when you arrive. Turn on data roaming for the eSIM line, and set it as your data line. Keep your home line on for calls and texts, but turn off its data roaming if your plan charges for it.

Should I Buy a Local SIM Card in Cozumel?

For stays of a month or more, yes. Telcel has the best coverage on the island. You can buy a SIM and recharge it at the Telcel store downtown or at the many OXXO convenience stores. A monthly prepaid package (called a recarga or paquete Amigo) of about 200 pesos typically includes a few gigabytes of data, unlimited calls and texts within Mexico, the U.S. and Canada, and unlimited WhatsApp and social apps.

  • Bring your passport. Mexico now requires new phone lines to be registered to an ID.
  • Your phone must be unlocked.
  • Ask the store to activate and test the SIM before you leave; not every OXXO can do it.
  • You'll get a Mexican number, so tell family to use WhatsApp to reach you.

Is There Good Wi-Fi in Cozumel?

Yes. Almost every hotel, vacation rental, café, restaurant and beach club has free Wi-Fi. Fiber internet is common in town, so speeds in most rentals are fine for video calls and streaming. Ask for the password ("¿Cuál es la contraseña del Wi-Fi?") when you order.

A few things to know:

  • Beach club and port Wi-Fi can be slow when it's busy.
  • Short power or internet outages happen, especially in storms. If you work remotely, keep an eSIM or local SIM as a backup hotspot.
  • Use a VPN or your phone's data for banking on public Wi-Fi.

Where Is Cell Coverage Weak in Cozumel?

Coverage is strong in San Miguel (downtown), the hotel zones and along most of the west coast. It gets patchy or drops out in a few places:

  • Parts of the wild east side, especially between the beach restaurants.
  • Inside Punta Sur park at the south tip.
  • Out on dive and snorkel boats once you're away from shore.

Download an offline map of the island in Google Maps before you drive around, and tell someone your plan if you're heading to the east side. Our getting around guide has driving tips.

Using Your Phone on a Cruise Stop

This is where most surprise bills come from. At sea, your phone can connect to the ship's own cellular network, which is billed as expensive maritime roaming even on plans that include Mexico.

  • Turn on airplane mode before you sail, and use the ship's Wi-Fi package if you need it.
  • Once you're docked and ashore, turn airplane mode off. Your phone will connect to a Mexican network, which your Mexico-included plan or eSIM covers.
  • Check that your phone shows a Mexican network (such as Telcel or AT&T MX), not the ship's network, before using data.
  • Many shops and bars near the piers offer free Wi-Fi if you buy something.

Our Cozumel cruise port guide covers the piers and what to do on your stop.

WhatsApp, Calling and Phone Numbers

  • WhatsApp is how Cozumel communicates. Tour operators, restaurants, drivers and rental owners all use it for bookings and directions. Install it before you go.
  • Mexican numbers are 10 digits. Cozumel numbers start with 987. From abroad, dial +52 then the 10 digits. See telephone numbers in Mexico for details.
  • Emergencies: Dial 911 from any phone. Our Cozumel safety guide has more.
  • Calls home: Use WhatsApp, FaceTime or another app over Wi-Fi or data to avoid call charges.

Charging and Gear

  • Mexico uses the same plugs as the U.S. and Canada (types A and B) and similar voltage, so no adapter is needed for North American devices.
  • A small power bank is handy for long beach and boat days.
  • Keep your phone dry in a waterproof phone pouch on boats and at the beach.
