San Miguel (town)
San Miguel is Cozumel's only real town and the easiest base for a first visit. You can walk to restaurants, shops and the waterfront, and the passenger ferry from Playa del Carmen docks right downtown. It's livelier and noisier than the rest of the island, and the best choice if you want to explore on foot and eat out every night.
North hotel zone
North of town, the coast is quieter, with hotels, condos and vacation homes along the water. Evenings bring sunsets over the sea, and the airport and town are a short drive away. It suits travelers who want calm days with dinner in town a quick taxi ride away.
South hotel zone
South of town is where many of the island's famous reefs, beach clubs and larger resorts sit, along with the cruise ship piers. Divers and snorkelers often stay here to be close to the water they came for. Expect busier roads on cruise days.
The east side
The eastern coast faces the open Caribbean and is mostly undeveloped: rugged beaches, big waves and a handful of beach bars. It's beautiful for a day trip, but the surf is often too rough for swimming, and there are very few places to stay.
How to choose
For a first trip, stay in or near town. For diving, look south. For quiet and sunsets, look north. For the east side, plan a day trip rather than a stay.
