Best Time to Visit Cozumel (2026): Weather by Month, Crowds & Prices

The best time to visit Cozumel is late March to May: dry, sunny, calm seas and fewer crowds than winter. Month-by-month weather and water temperatures, hurricane season, nortes, sargassum, prices and FAQs for 2026.

Quick answer: The best time to visit Cozumel is late March to May, when the island is dry and sunny, the sea is calm and warm (about 80–82°F / 27–28°C), and the winter crowds have gone home. December to April has the best weather overall but the highest prices. The cheapest months are September and October, which are also the wettest and the peak of hurricane season (June 1 to November 30). Cozumel is warm all year, so there is no truly bad month for a beach or dive trip.

Cozumel sits just off the Yucatán coast in the Mexican Caribbean, so it has two real seasons: a dry season from about December to May and a rainy season from about June to November. Air temperatures only swing about 10°F through the year. What changes is rain, wind, crowds and price. This guide breaks it down month by month so you can pick the right time for your trip.

What Is the Weather Like in Cozumel's Dry Season (December to May)?

This is Cozumel's high season, and for good reason. Days are sunny and in the low to high 80s°F (28–31°C), humidity is lower, and rain usually comes as a quick shower that's gone in minutes. March and April are the driest months, and May is the hottest of the dry months, with calm seas that divers love.

The one catch in winter is the norte. From about November to March, cold fronts sweep down from the Gulf of Mexico with strong north winds. A norte can bring a few cloudy, cooler days (evenings can dip into the upper 60s°F / about 20°C) and rough seas. When winds are strong, the harbor master closes the port, which cancels dive and snorkel boats and sometimes the ferry to Playa del Carmen. Build a flexible day or two into a winter trip.

What Is the Weather Like in Cozumel's Rainy Season (June to November)?

The rainy season is hot and humid, with highs around 88–92°F (31–33°C). Rain usually arrives as short, heavy afternoon downpours, often followed by sunshine, rather than all-day rain. July is often drier than June or August because of a mid-summer dry spell locals call the canícula. September and October are the wettest months, and that's when most tropical storms happen.

The upside: the water is at its warmest (about 84–85°F / 29°C), the island is quiet, and hotels, vacation rentals and tours are at their cheapest.

When Is Hurricane Season in Cozumel?

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, and the highest risk for Cozumel is August through October. Most years pass without a direct hit, but storms do happen. Hurricane Wilma in October 2005 was the most damaging in living memory, and the island rebuilt quickly.

If you travel in hurricane season:

  • Buy travel insurance that covers hurricanes and trip interruption, before a storm is named.
  • Book refundable flights and rooms where you can.
  • Watch the National Hurricane Center (nhc.noaa.gov) for the week before you fly.
  • Follow local instructions. Hotels and the municipality are well practiced at storm prep, and the port will close to boats well ahead of a storm.

When Is Sargassum Season in Cozumel?

Sargassum is a brown seaweed that has washed up on Caribbean beaches in recent years, mostly between about April and September. The amount changes a lot from year to year and week to week. The good news for Cozumel is that most sargassum lands on the exposed east side, while the west side, where the hotels, beach clubs and snorkel reefs are, is sheltered and usually stays much cleaner. Ask your hotel or check recent local photos before your trip if it's a concern.

When Is the Best Time to Dive and Snorkel in Cozumel?

Cozumel is a year-round dive destination, and visibility on the west-side reefs is often 80–100 feet (25–30 m) or more. A few seasonal notes:

  • April to August: Usually the calmest seas and fewest port closures. Great for beginners and boat trips to Palancar and Colombia.
  • December to March: Cooler water (about 78–79°F / 26°C), so many divers wear a 3 mm wetsuit. Spotted eagle rays are often seen in winter. Nortes can cancel a few boat days.
  • July to October: The warmest water of the year and quiet dive boats, with some storm risk.

Snorkelers can get in from shore all year at spots like Dzul-Ha and Sky Reef. See our guide to the best snorkeling in Cozumel, or compare operators in the Cozumel dive and snorkel directory.

When Is Cozumel Busiest and Most Expensive?

  • Peak season (mid-December to Easter): The highest prices, especially over Christmas and New Year, spring break in March and Holy Week (Semana Santa). Book flights and rooms several months ahead.
  • Shoulder season (late April to June, and November to mid-December): Good weather, fewer people and better rates.
  • Low season (September to October): The best deals of the year. Some restaurants and shops take their own vacations, so a few places may be closed.
  • Mexican holidays: July and August are busy with Mexican families, and long weekends bring visitors over on the ferry from Playa del Carmen.

Cruise ships visit Cozumel all year, with more ships in winter. On a busy cruise day, downtown and the beach clubs near the piers get crowded until mid-afternoon. Our Cozumel cruise port guide covers cruise days in detail.

Cozumel Festivals and Events by Season

  • Carnaval (February or March): Cozumel's carnival, one of the oldest in Mexico, fills the waterfront with parades, costumes and music in the days before Lent.
  • Feria de El Cedral (late April to early May): A traditional festival in the island's oldest village, with music, dancing and rodeo.
  • Sea turtle season (May to October): Turtles nest on Cozumel's beaches and hatchlings head to sea from about July. Read about turtle nesting season in Cozumel.
  • Ironman Cozumel (November): Athletes from around the world swim, bike and run around the island. Expect road closures and full hotels on race weekend.
  • Día de Muertos (November 1–2): Altars, marigolds and family gatherings across the island.
  • Christmas and New Year: Festive downtown, fireworks and the busiest, priciest weeks of the year.

Event dates change each year. Check the official event or municipal announcements before you book.

What to Pack for Cozumel in Any Season

  • Reef-safe mineral sunscreen and a rash guard. The sun is strong all year, and chemical sunscreen harms the reef.
  • A light rain jacket from June to November.
  • A sweater or light layer for breezy winter evenings and air-conditioned restaurants.
  • Insect repellent, especially in the rainy season and at dusk.
  • Water shoes for rocky shore entries on the west side.
