Quick answer: Two dates to know if you're coming to Cozumel this winter. IRONMAN Cozumel, the full-distance triathlon, is on Sunday, November 22, 2026, and much of the coast road is closed to traffic for most of that day. And on Thursday, December 24, 2026, Italian airline Neos starts the first direct flight from Europe to Cozumel, a weekly Boeing 787 from Milan Malpensa.
IRONMAN Cozumel: Sunday, November 22, 2026
Thousands of athletes from dozens of countries come to Cozumel each November for one of the most popular IRONMAN races in the world: a 3.8 km (2.4 mile) swim in the clear water off the west coast, a 180 km (112 mile) bike ride in laps around the island, including the windy east side, and a 42 km (26.2 mile) marathon along the downtown waterfront. Athlete check-in opens from Thursday, November 19, and the awards are on Monday, November 23. Details are on the official IRONMAN Cozumel page.
If you're on the island that weekend:
- Expect road closures on race day. The coast road (the main road around the island) and parts of downtown are closed or restricted from early morning into the night. Taxis take long detours, and beach clubs and east side restaurants can be hard to reach.
- Book early. Hotels, rentals and rental cars fill up for race week.
- Come and cheer. The marathon loops along the waterfront downtown, and the finish line is a party until midnight.
Neos starts Milan–Cozumel flights on December 24
Quintana Roo governor Mara Lezama announced that Neos will fly from Milan Malpensa to Cozumel International Airport every Thursday from December 24, 2026, using a Boeing 787 Dreamliner. It's the first direct route between Europe and the island; until now, European visitors have flown into Cancún and taken the ferry from Playa del Carmen. Aviation schedule sites list it as a triangle route, Milan to Cozumel, then Cancún, then back to Milan, so the return to Italy leaves from Cancún. Bookings and the latest schedule are on the Neos website.
For travelers from the US and Canada nothing changes: Cozumel still has direct winter flights from several US and Canadian cities. See our guide to getting to Cozumel for current routes, and to the ferry from Playa del Carmen.
