How to Get to Cozumel (2026): Direct Flights, the Cancun Route and the Ferry

How to get to Cozumel in 2026: which airlines fly nonstop to Cozumel airport (CZM), when flying into Cancun and taking the ferry makes sense, step by step with times and costs, plus what to expect when you land, the Visitax fee and FAQs.

Quick answer: The easiest way to get to Cozumel is to fly nonstop into Cozumel International Airport (CZM), which is about 10 minutes by car from downtown San Miguel. Direct flights come from several U.S. and Canadian cities, many of them seasonal. If there's no good flight to Cozumel from your city, fly into Cancun (CUN), take a bus or transfer about an hour south to Playa del Carmen, and ride the passenger ferry across to Cozumel in about 45 minutes. Plan on 2.5 to 3.5 hours from Cancun airport to the island, and make sure you land early enough to catch an evening ferry.

We've made both trips more times than we can count, with luggage, dive gear and a kid in tow. Here's how each route works in 2026, what it costs and how to choose.

Can You Fly Directly to Cozumel?

Yes. Cozumel has its own international airport, Cozumel International Airport (CZM), run by the airport group ASUR. It's a small, easy airport on the edge of town, so you can be in your hotel or rental within half an hour of landing. U.S. and Canadian airlines fly here year round, with extra flights in winter and spring.

Which airlines fly nonstop to Cozumel?

Routes change with the seasons, so treat this list as a starting point and check the airline's own schedule for your dates. In 2026, nonstop service to Cozumel includes:

Airline Nonstop from
American Airlines Dallas–Fort Worth, Miami, plus seasonal flights such as Chicago O'Hare
United Airlines Houston, Denver, plus seasonal flights such as Chicago O'Hare
Delta Air Lines Atlanta and Minneapolis–St. Paul
Sun Country Minneapolis–St. Paul (seasonal)
Air Canada, WestJet and Air Transat Toronto and Montreal, mostly in the winter season
Volaris, Viva and Aeromexico Mexico City and other Mexican cities

If you don't live near one of those cities, you can usually connect through Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, Charlotte or Mexico City and still land in Cozumel the same day. Flights fill up and prices jump over Christmas, spring break and Easter week, so book those dates early. Our best time to visit Cozumel guide shows which months are cheaper.

Is it cheaper to fly into Cancun or Cozumel?

The flight to Cancun is often cheaper, but the trip may not be. Cancun is one of the busiest airports in Mexico, with far more airlines and routes, so fares can be lower. Once you add the bus or transfer, the ferry and half a day of travel each way, the savings shrink, especially for a family. Price both options door to door before you book. A direct flight to Cozumel almost always wins on time and hassle.

How to Get From Cancun to Cozumel, Step by Step

There is no bridge, and the passenger ferries leave from Playa del Carmen, not Cancun. Here's the usual route.

  1. Land at Cancun airport and clear immigration and customs. Allow 30 to 60 minutes, longer on busy Saturdays.
  2. Get to Playa del Carmen (about 1 hour). The cheapest option is the ADO bus, which leaves from outside the terminals roughly every hour and costs around 220 to 240 pesos (about $11 to $13) per person. Buy tickets at the ADO counter in arrivals or online. A private transfer costs more, roughly $80 to $150 per vehicle, but drops you right at the ferry pier and saves waiting.
  3. Walk to the ferry pier. The ADO bus station on Fifth Avenue in Playa del Carmen is a few blocks from the passenger ferry pier at the foot of Calle 1 Sur. If your bus stops at the other ADO station on 20th Avenue instead, it's a short taxi ride. Porters with carts will offer to help with bags for a tip.
  4. Take the ferry to Cozumel (about 45 minutes). Three companies, Ultramar, Winjet and Xcaret Xailing, run passenger ferries through the day, with departures about every hour from early morning until around 9 to 11 p.m. A one-way ticket is roughly 250 to 380 pesos (about $13 to $20) per adult, and there's a small port fee. Buy a one-way ticket so you can take whichever company leaves first on the way back. Our Cozumel ferry guide compares the three companies and covers luggage and schedules.
  5. Arrive at the downtown ferry pier in San Miguel. You land right on the waterfront, across from the main plaza. Taxis wait at the pier, and our guide to getting around Cozumel explains how the fixed taxi fares work.

Timing tip: If your flight lands in Cancun after about 6 p.m., you may miss the last ferry. Either book a night in Playa del Carmen or look for a flight straight to Cozumel. On the way home, leave Cozumel at least five to six hours before an international flight out of Cancun. The sea can be rough in winter cold fronts, and ferries occasionally pause for weather.

Is the ferry crossing rough?

Usually not, but it can be bumpy when the wind is up, especially from November to March. Sit low and near the middle of the boat, look at the horizon, and take seasickness tablets before you board if you're prone to it. The top deck has the views, and on calm days you may spot dolphins or flying fish.

What about the car ferry?

A separate car ferry runs between Calica, south of Playa del Carmen, and a terminal south of downtown Cozumel. It's slow, runs only a few times a day and is mainly used by trucks and residents. Most rental car contracts on the mainland don't allow you to take the car to the island, so visitors are better off renting a car once they're in Cozumel.

Can you fly from Cancun to Cozumel?

Sometimes. A small regional airline, Mayair, has flown the 20-minute hop between Cancun and Cozumel, but service has come and gone over the years and seats are limited. If it's running when you travel, it's a scenic shortcut. Otherwise, the bus and ferry is the dependable route.

What to Expect When You Land in Cozumel

Cozumel's airport is small and relaxed. After you leave the plane, you'll go through immigration, pick up your bags and pass through customs.

  • Passport: You need a valid passport. U.S. and Canadian citizens don't need a visa for a vacation.
  • Tourist permit (FMM): Mexico has moved to a digital tourist permit at most airports. The officer decides how many days you get, so check the stamp or printout before you walk away, and keep it until you leave.
  • Customs: Hand in your customs form if you're given one, then press the button at the exit. Green means go; red means a quick bag check.
  • Getting to your hotel: Regular city taxis can't pick up at the airport. Buy a shared shuttle van or private taxi at the transportation counter inside the terminal. It's about a 10-minute ride to downtown and a little longer to hotels on the north or south coast. Full details are in our getting around Cozumel guide.
  • Money: The airport exchange rate is poor. Use a bank ATM in town instead. See money and tipping in Cozumel.
  • Rental cars: Several rental companies have desks at the airport. Mexican liability insurance is required and added to the price.

Do I Have to Pay the Visitax Fee?

Yes, if you're a foreign visitor. Quintana Roo, the state that includes Cozumel, Cancun and Playa del Carmen, charges international tourists a visitor fee called Visitax. In 2026 it works out to roughly $15 to $18 per person. Pay it on the official state website before you leave and keep the QR code on your phone, because it can be checked at the airport. Only use the official site, since look-alike sites charge extra.

Tips for Flying Home From Cozumel

  1. Get to the airport about 2 hours before an international flight. Lines are short most days but can stack up on busy Saturdays in high season.
  2. Book your ride ahead. Any city taxi can take you to the airport, and your hotel or rental host can call one.
  3. Have your Visitax QR code ready.
  4. Eat in town first. The airport has a few snack bars and shops, but the choice is limited.
  5. Divers: wait at least 18 hours after your last dive before you fly, and 24 hours after multiple dive days. Our scuba diving guide has more.
