Quick answer: Cozumel is on track for its busiest cruise year ever. The state port authority, Apiqroo, expects around 1,375 ship calls and 4.6 to 4.8 million passengers in 2026, up from about 1,300 calls and 4.7 million passengers in 2025. More than a million cruise visitors arrived in January and February alone, and the island had welcomed nearly 3 million by late July. The extra ships will use the existing piers: the long-debated fourth cruise pier was cancelled for good by Mexico's environment ministry (Semarnat) in February 2026.
With the winter high season starting in November, here's what the numbers mean if you're visiting.
Why so many ships?
Cozumel is already the busiest cruise port in Mexico and one of the busiest in the world. Western Caribbean itineraries from Texas and Florida almost always include it, and lines keep sending newer, bigger ships. Winter is the peak: from November to April it's common to see five or six ships in port on the same day, and some weeks bring 25 to 30 calls.
The fourth pier is cancelled
A fourth cruise terminal was proposed for the west coast, close to the reefs of the national marine park. After years of protests from divers, fishermen and environmental groups, the federal government said in 2025 that it would not go ahead. In late February 2026, Semarnat formally withdrew the project's environmental permit and closed the file, saying the original review had left out recommendations from the national parks commission and a marine refuge on the island's west coast. Conservation groups celebrated. Some business groups warned that reversing a federal permit creates uncertainty for investors, and local press reports the developer has challenged the decision in court.
For now, ships keep using the three existing piers (Punta Langosta downtown, plus the International and Puerta Maya piers a few kilometers south), and tender boats on the busiest days.
What it means for your trip
- Check the ship schedule. On days with five or more ships, downtown, the beach clubs and the most popular snorkel spots are crowded from about 9 am to 4 pm. Sites like CruiseMapper list which ships are in port each day.
- Plan around the crowds. If you're staying on the island, go to the busiest places early in the morning, late in the afternoon, or on light ship days, and save the east side or a dive for the busiest days.
- Book popular excursions ahead in December, at New Year and during spring break.
